Block drums have a different sound from a ply drum in that a block drum has a very quick decay and thicker tone. Sound engineers no longer need to use noise gates or heavy reverb to enhance natural tones. Different woods are used because of their different fundamental notes. Sheoak has a prominent mid frequency.
